Biography
With his rugged good looks, Sean Bean has made a niche portraying bounders, cads and villains. The son of a welder, he expected to pursue that line of work until he began acting in local productions in Sheffield, England. Encouraged by success in his teens, he applied to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to which he received a scholarship. Shortly after graduating, Bean made his stage debut as Tybalt in a production of "Romeo and Juliet". More stage work followed before he caught the attention of Derek Jarman who cast Bean in the experimental biopic "Caravaggio" (1986). As a gambler whose blond looks captivate Caravaggio (Nigel Terry), Bean brought a rough-edged sexuality to the role. Returning to the stage at the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company, he alternated the roles of Romeo and Captain Spencer in "The Fair Maid of the West" in repertory before he returned to features in Mike Figgis' hauntingly moody "Stormy Monday" (1988). That same year, he reteamed with Jarman for "War Requiem" and was featured in Bruce Robinson's "How to Get Ahead in Advertising". Bean also earned critical praise for his performance as Richard Harris' wayward son in "The Field" (1990) and as a blood-thirsty IRA gunman in "Patriot Games" (1992). He was featured in Caroline Thompson's faithful rendering of "Black Beauty" (1994), the British drama "Shopping" (1994) and played Agent 006 to Pierce Brosnan's James Bond in "GoldenEye" (1995). In "Leo Tolstoy's 'Anna Karenina'" (1996), Bean was cast as the dashing Count Vronsky opposite Sophie Marceau's Anna.
